Mid year tech review – best tech of 2021 and what’s to come

2021 has been a topsy-turvy year for tech. Chip shortages affected supplies of everything from PlayStation 5s to cars, while behemoth brands like Apple, Google and Amazon reported record profits as device use surged in lockdown.

Thankfully, tech companies have been quick to adapt to “the new normal” that we’ve all been experiencing in the last year. Samsung released a smart wardrobe called the AirDresser that sanitises your clothes between washes, while the pets we’ve been adopting were catered for by the myQ Pet Portal, which allows larger animals to come and go using a Bluetooth collar.

Mobile phone manufacturers also innovated this year. Lenovo released the Legion Phone Duel 2, featuring built-in triggers that make Fortnite as fun to play on mobile as it is on console. And as we all became a bit more budget-conscious, Realme released its 8 Pro phone boasting an OLED display, quad-camera array and 50W fast charging for less than £300 -- a real bargain.

The computing space also got a much-needed upgrade this year with Apple’s new iMac. This beautiful computer managed to pack a crazy-powerful M1 chip into a colourful chassis that’s no thicker than the original iPhone. And speaking of Apple, it also made lossless music streaming the norm this year by adding hi-res audio support to Apple Music for free, allowing millions of people to enjoy music as the artist intended. Expect Spotify to follow suit shortly.

As for the rest of the year, drone deliveries have gone mainstream thanks to pioneering food and drink shops experimenting when they were forced to close. Gaming has also grown massively, as has eSports viewership -- expect to watch Call of Duty competitions on television before long, and even in the Olympics within the next decade.
